Top 4 Day Trips in the Charlotte Area

December 28th, 2015 by

Charlotte is a fun, invigorating city, but sometimes you need to get out of town to relax in a different environment. When the time comes, consider taking one of these four day trips. There is plenty of diversity in the area, so you can always find something that appeals to your interests.

Fort Dobbs State Historic Site

Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville is a fun way to learn about the Seven Years War that took place from 1754 to 1763. The fort’s historic site has plenty of markers that will make it easy for you to find landmarks and other important spots. There is also a nature trail and a scaled replica of the fort.

Many people like to visit Fort Dobbs during reenactments. These events feature actors in historically accurate dress so you can get a better idea of what it was like to live during those difficult times.

Since Statesville is only an hour north of Charlotte on I-77, you can easily make time to see other spots in the area.

Carolina Beach

If you don’t mind spending three to four hours on the road, then Carolina Beach is one of the best day trips around Charlotte.

The obvious allure of Carolina Beach for most people is that they can lay in the sand and catch some rays. Even if that somehow doesn’t sound appealing to you, Carolina Beach is still an impressive place to visit.

Some of the most popular activities in Carolina Beach include:

  • The Island of Lights Festival
  • Christmas by the Sea
  • New Year’s Eve fireworks display

No matter what time of year you want to hit the road, Carolina Beach has something to offer.

Chimney Rock State Park

North Carolina is full of great forests and parks. Chimney Rock State Park, which is about two hours west of Charlotte, offers plenty of hiking, rock climbing, and bird-watching. It’s a quiet place where you can get away from the city and recharge in nature.

After you hike around Chimney Rock, head to Lake Lure, where you can enjoy:

  • Shopping
  • Health spas
  • Historical sites

Asheville is also nearby, so feel free to visit the downtown area to sample the local restaurants and breweries.

Badlin Lake Recreation Area

If you would like to spend more time in nature, but you don’t want to drive all the way to Chimney Rock, then head east toward Badin Lake in Uwharrie National Forest. The drive usually takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

The Badin Lake Recreation Area has trails for hiking and biking. You can also swim in the lake or rent a boat for waterskiing and tubing. If you decide to get a motorized boat, make sure you spend some time floating quietly near the shore. With some luck you will catch glimpses of local wildlife.

The open road is waiting to take you anywhere you want to go. As long as you have the right car, you can enjoy these four day trips without any problems.
